McAlester Discovery - Oct 6

This day trip features a drive south to Pittsburg County to the largest city in the Choctaw Nation.  Our group will visit the Masonic Lodge Scottish Rite, the oldest Masonic building in Oklahoma (and the largest) and listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings.  In addition it has a very impressive collection of artwork and performance backdrops that will astound our group.

We will also tour the International Temple, Supreme Assembly, Order of the Rainbow for Girls which serves as the headquarters for the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls. It too was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 14, 2013.  The Order was founded in McAlester on April 6, 1922 by Rev. W. Mark Sexson. From the initial installation class of 86 girls, the Order grew to 50,000 members in 1940. In 1941, the Order began plans for construction of a larger building that would serve as a memorial to those who had made the Order possible, and a shrine for members worldwide.

We will also enjoy a tour and tasting at Whispering Meadows Vineyards and Winery after our lunch in downtown McAlester.
